I am a graduate from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s in English Writing and minors in journalism and art and design with a concentration in photography. I currently work for Lake County News-Chronicle, a community newspaper in Two Harbors, Minn., as the editor. The News-Chronicle is a weekly newspaper that covers all of Lake County. I write stories of all kinds for the paper as well as handle the day to day operations of the newspaper.
My previous job was at The Mining Journal, a daily community newspaper in Marquette, Michigan, as the photo editor and senior photographer (hired May 2013). What that means is I was in charge of handling anything photography wise including managing another photographer and toning photos for print and web. I photographed many different youth, high school and college sports on a regular basis as well as any news or feature events when needed. I also wrote a bi-weekly column and the youth section front page story for Sunday’s paper every week.
Before I was hired as the photo editor in May 2013, I was the Ishpeming Bureau reporter (hired Sept. 2012) and before that the part-time photographer (hired March 2011) for a year and a half. My duties as the part-time photographer were similar to what I did as the photo editor. I shot mostly sports, but did shoot news events and feature events. While I was a part-photographer I wrote articles on a occasion and wrote my bi-weekly column. I toned photographs for the paper and did cutouts for the front page and the sports front page.
My last year of school I was the news editor for NMU’s student newspaper The North Wind. Because it’s a student job I had to step down when I graduated. The North Wind is where I started my journalism career. One of my final articles for the student newspaper, “ASNMU President in jail,” was picked up by the local media and in turn then by The Associated Press. That article can be found on my Articles page.
I’ve learned a lot about journalism from working at The North Wind and even more from working at The Mining Journal. I have found my passion with photojournalism and sports photography through these outlets.
